Why the type of roach matters
UC IPM says the German cockroach is the most common indoor cockroach in California. It lives and breeds indoors. It likes warm, humid spots close to food and water, which is why it turns up in kitchens and bathrooms. It is also common in apartment buildings.
Other roaches, such as the American and oriental cockroach, live outdoors in drains, sewers and water meter boxes. They sometimes wander inside. A large roach near a door or floor drain is a different problem from small roaches in kitchen cabinets.
UC IPM advises naming the species before taking action, because the best control steps differ by species. Indoor roaches can also spoil food and add allergens to the home.
Signs of cockroaches
- Roaches that scatter when you turn on a light at night.
- Tiny dark specks, like ground pepper, in drawers, cabinets or behind appliances.
- Small brown egg cases in cracks, or carried at the tail end of a female roach.
- Shed skins in corners and along cabinet edges.
- A musty smell in cabinets or closets.
- Large roaches near drains, the garage or outside doors, which often come in from outdoors.
What a cockroach control plan covers
UC IPM says pesticides alone will not solve a cockroach problem. A sound plan usually mixes these parts.
- Which species it is. Sticky traps can catch roaches so they can be identified.
- Where they hide, such as behind the fridge and stove, under sinks and inside wall voids.
- Food, water and clutter that keep roaches going.
- Gel baits or bait stations near hiding spots. UC IPM says baits give better control than sprays.
- Sealing cracks and adding door sweeps for roaches that come in from outside.
- How long it may take. UC IPM says it can take 7 days or longer to see fewer roaches.
- If you rent or share walls, whether the landlord or building manager should be part of the plan.
Ways to keep roaches out
These steps follow UC IPM advice on food, water and hiding places.
- Store food in tightly sealed containers.
- Keep trash in bins with tight fitting lids.
- Fix plumbing leaks and drips.
- Vacuum cracks, clean behind appliances and wipe up crumbs and spills.
- Clear out piles of paper and cardboard boxes, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Seal cracks and use weather stripping and door sweeps.
Skip foggers and bug bombs. UC IPM says they can be hazardous and may push roaches into other areas without killing them.
Questions about cockroach control
Why did a bug bomb not work?
UC IPM says foggers and bombs can scatter roaches to new areas without killing them. Baits placed near hiding spots, along with cleanup and sealing, work better.
I only saw one roach. Do I have a problem?
Not always. One large roach that wandered in from outside is different from small roaches in the cabinets. Sticky traps along walls and under appliances can show whether more are around.
I rent an apartment. What should I do?
Tell your landlord or property manager. UC IPM says German cockroach problems can spread to other parts of a building, so neighbors may need to be part of the plan.
How soon will I see fewer roaches?
UC IPM says it may take 7 days or longer with baits. Keep food and water out of reach during that time. A provider can tell you what to expect for your home.
